About Steven

The Art of Steven Brown

Steven Brown is one of Scotland’s most celebrated contemporary artists, known worldwide for artwork that does something rare - it makes people feel something the moment they see it.

Born in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire in 1972, Steven grew up with a love of art that never left him. Life took him into retail for nearly two decades, but the creative instinct was always there, waiting.

In 2010, Steven suffered two heart attacks. The recovery was long and the period that followed was dark. It was during this time that he returned to painting - not with any commercial intention, but as a way to process, to heal, and to find some light. What emerged from those quiet hours with a canvas was a style entirely his own: bold, vivid, emotionally alive, and instantly recognisable.

The response was immediate. Friends, family and strangers connected with the work in a way Steven hadn’t anticipated. Colour-saturated Highland cattle, sweeping Scottish landscapes, wildlife portraits bursting with personality, figures caught in moments of joy - each piece carried a warmth that was impossible to ignore. Word spread the way it only does when something is genuinely special.

From those first paintings, Steven built something extraordinary. His passion for the natural world — for animals, for the Scottish landscape, for the particular quality of light on a loch or a hillside — runs through everything he creates. No two pieces are the same, but every single one is unmistakably his.

In 2021, Steven suffered two strokes. He had to relearn his techniques from the ground up - the same discipline and determination that first drove him to a canvas during his darkest days carrying him through again. He came back stronger.

Today, Steven’s work has found its way into the homes of almost one million customers across the world.

Steven Brown Studio is the next chapter - a direct connection between Steven’s art and the people who love it, built on the values that have defined his work from the very beginning: colour, craft, heart and Scotland.

Colour That Lives Forever.
